Assateague Island National Seashore

I am linking up with Fiona's Green Day and Tricia's  Watery Wednesday II and Gemma's  Scenic Weekend

During this past weekend get away hubby and I visited Assateague Island National  Seashore. I am not sure there are many places where you can hang out on the beach and see wild ponies. They are free to roam all over the island of Assateague. These are some of the shots I took during our visit.

You are not allowed to feed the horses but they must be used to people stopping and feeding them from their cars. I had to hurry and put my car window up because this horse walked right up to my window and was just about to stick his head inside my car. He turned his head when he saw I had nothing for him.

I have posted before about the Chincoteague ponies and now these are the Assateague ponies. Chincoteague is in Virginia and Assateague Island is in Maryland. The islands are separately by a tiny bit of water that I think the horses can swim across.

Along with the wild ponies, there are deer and lots of great birds to see. Some people come to Assateague to camp either in tents or their RV's.

The water levels were the highest I have ever seen them, I think it was due to the storm in the Atlantic and the high tide.

It was a little windy but we were able to take a short walk on the beach at Assateague. It was a fun weekend at the beach. Lots of beautiful scenery, lovely skies and lots of great birds and critters. Thanks for stopping by, I hope you enjoyed my post.

Thanks for stopping by to see my post and thanks to Tricia the host of Watery Wednesday II  and to Fiona for hosting Green Day  and to Gemma for hosting Scenic Weekends.  I wish everyone a safe and happy weekend.

  3. I like the beach picture but they are all good. And as always being able to click on them to get a big view makes a huge difference.

  4. That is so cool that there is a place here in the U.S. where horses can roam free. They sure are good looking horses! The ocean view is also worth going there for, huh? Thanks for sharing. I never even heard of this place before.

  5. What an amazing place! I have never seen wild horses before. They seem so tame and trusting to allow you drive right up right to it.

  18. Great blog post! A little FYI, these ponies are classified as Chincoteague Ponies (despite living on Assateague.) There is a northern herd, on the Maryland end of Assateague, and a southern herd, on the VA end of Assateague. The ponies are rounded up once a year by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department and swum across the narrowest part of the Chincoteague Channel, at Memorial Park. The foals are auctioned off to keep herd numbers under control.
